Lum Sohpetbneng: A total of 40 commemorative monoliths were unveiled at the sacred summit of Lum Sohpetbneng on Saturday as part of the 125th anniversary celebration of Seng Khasi. The ceremony, organised by Seng Khasi Kmie in collaboration with units of Seng Khasi and Seiñ Raij, served as a central highlight of the organisation’s year-long milestone observance.
Founded in 1899 by sixteen young men in Shillong, Seng Khasi was established to preserve, protect, and promote the Khasi Way of Life. Over the past 125 years, the organisation has expanded into a broad movement with over 300 branches across Meghalaya, dedicated to safeguarding Khasi culture, rituals, and traditional philosophy.
Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar, who attended the event as chief guest, lauded Seng Khasi for its continued dedication to preserving indigenous knowledge and identity. The gathering also witnessed the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Art and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai, along with traditional leaders and community representatives from Jowai, Nangbah, and Mylliem.
Lum Sohpetbneng, revered as the spiritual origin of the Khasi people, holds deep cultural and religious importance. Organisers said the monolith installation symbolised the community’s unbroken bond with its ancestral heritage while fostering unity and pride amid modern-day transformations.
The 125th anniversary celebrations will conclude on November 23 with the 126th Seng Kut Snem at Weiking Ground in Jaïaw, Shillong.
