Guwahati, Mar 1: In a continued crackdown on drug trafficking, Lekhapani Police under Assam’s Margherita subdivision seized 58 grams of suspected heroin during a joint operation with Jagun Police on the afternoon of February 28.
Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a Maruti Swift (AS23AF5226) at 5 Mile while it was travelling from Jagun towards Ledo. During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered five soap cases containing a total of 58 grams of heroin.
Police arrested the alleged peddler, identified as 21-year-old Vishal Borgohain of Phulbari village under Jagun Police Station. According to officials, Borgohain had previously been jailed twice in connection with similar offences.
The seized contraband is estimated to have a market value of around Rs 2.5 lakh.
Police officials said the anti-drug operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb the spread of narcotics in the region. Residents of the area have appreciated the action and urged authorities to continue strict enforcement against drug trafficking.
