Imphal, Feb 10: The Manipur government on February 10 ordered a temporary suspension of internet and data services across Ukhrul district for five days, citing fears that social media could be misused to fuel unrest amid a volatile law and order situation.
An official order issued by the Home Department said the decision was taken after reviewing the prevailing situation and the potential misuse of unrestricted internet services. The government expressed serious apprehension that anti-social elements could use social media platforms to circulate inflammatory images, posts and videos, leading to loss of life, damage to property and disturbance to public tranquillity and communal harmony.
The order warned that false rumours and provocative content could be spread through social media, messaging services, SMS and dongle-based internet, thereby aggravating tensions. As a preventive and precautionary measure, internet and data services, including broadband, VPN and VSAT, have been suspended across the entire revenue jurisdiction of Ukhrul district.
Invoking powers under Rule 3 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, the Governor of Manipur ordered the suspension with effect from 11.30 am on February 10. The restrictions will remain in force for five days.
All internet service providers have been directed to ensure strict compliance, and the government warned that violations would invite legal action. The order was passed ex-parte due to the emergent nature of the situation and was directed to be published through print and electronic media for public information.
The suspension followed a request from Ukhrul District Magistrate Ashish Das, IAS, who cited recent disturbances and the threat to public safety, stressing the need to curb the spread of misinformation. The order was signed by N. Ashok Kumar, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home), Government of Manipur.
