Tributes Paid to Litterateur Nirod Choudhury in Doomdooma

Tinsukia: Writers, cultural figures, and residents of Doomdooma came together to pay homage to eminent Assamese litterateur, journalist, and author Nirod Choudhury on his 26th death anniversary, remembering his literary contributions and deep bond with his homeland.

The memorial programme, organised by the Doomdooma Sahitya Sabha at its Azad Road office, witnessed the participation of noted writers, intellectuals, and local residents. Speakers recalled Choudhury as a prolific author, editor of Assam Bani, film critic, and sports journalist who authored more than 50 works, including novels, essays, and short stories that vividly portrayed the social and emotional fabric of Assam.

Addressing the gathering, his wife Indira Choudhury spoke of his unwavering love for his birthplace and lamented that his collected works are yet to be published despite appeals to the authorities. Their son, Imon Choudhury, Deputy Director in the Tourism Department, expressed gratitude that the community continues to honour his father decades after his passing.

Choudhury’s literary imagination, often compared to Thomas Hardy’s Wessex, also extended to Assamese cinema, notably the landmark film Chamelee Memsaab. The programme featured tribute songs by students of Doomdooma Girls’ Higher Secondary School and cultural performances by local artistes. On the occasion, the “Sahitya Surjya Nirod Choudhury Memorial Award 2026” was conferred on Sunit Kumar Bora, actor, singer, composer, and alumnus of the National School of Drama, recognising his contribution to arts and culture.
