Amid growing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Akhil Gogoi, president of Raijor Dal and MLA from Sivasagar, has called on the Congress to expedite alliance discussions and assign former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Bhupen Kumar Borah to lead negotiations with opposition parties.
Addressing the media on seat-sharing and alliance deliberations, Gogoi said that Gaurav Gogoi had informed him via WhatsApp that the upcoming Assembly session would be held from February 16 to 19, during which alliance talks are expected to take place. However, he emphasised that his party is keen on concluding discussions at the earliest.
“We want the alliance to be finalised at the earliest,” Gogoi said, reiterating Raijor Dal’s commitment to forging opposition unity against the ruling dispensation. He maintained that his party has consistently supported collective efforts among like-minded political forces.
Recalling earlier coordination under Borah’s leadership, Gogoi noted that the Opposition Oikyo Moncho functioned cohesively during his tenure as APCC president, marked by dialogue and mutual understanding among parties. He argued that Borah’s experience and political acumen make him well-suited to steer the alliance process.
“He understands where Congress is strong and where Raijor Dal can perform better. If given the responsibility, we can sit together for a day and arrive at a final decision,” Gogoi said, describing Borah’s previous role in uniting opposition leaders as both practical and effective.
The remarks reflect renewed momentum among opposition parties in Assam to consolidate strategies ahead of the 2026 polls, where alliance arithmetic is expected to significantly influence the electoral outcome.
