The upcoming 27th General Conference-cum-Election of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union, scheduled from February 17 to 23, 2026, has generated widespread debate across Arunachal Pradesh amid concerns over venue refusals, alleged violence and its timing during ongoing board examinations.
Dera Natung Government College has reportedly declined to host the event on its campus, citing the peak academic season. Observers suggest that past instances of unrest and property damage during similar programmes may have influenced the decision. Meanwhile, Siddhartha Hall at the Thupten Gyatsaling Monastery has also faced objections from local residents who fear disruption to peace and daily life.
The schedule of the conference has further fuelled unease, as it coincides with major examinations. Arunachal Pradesh State Board exams are already underway, with Classes III and XI having begun earlier this month and Classes V and VIII set for February 18 and 19. Central Board of Secondary Education examinations are due to commence from February 15. Parents and educators have expressed concern that a politically charged event during this period could affect students preparing for crucial assessments.
Social media reports alleging significant financial spending in the election process and political backing of candidates have added to the controversy, although these claims remain unverified. The circulation of such allegations has intensified scrutiny over the influence of money and external interests in student politics.
More troubling are reports of firing near the AAPSU office during the registration process. While investigations are ongoing, the incident has heightened anxiety about the possibility of intimidation in what is intended to be a democratic student exercise. There are also unconfirmed claims of attempts by underground elements to influence certain student unions in eastern Arunachal, raising concerns about potential external interference.
Once regarded as a strong and unified student voice in the state, AAPSU now faces a pivotal moment. As the election approaches, calls are growing for authorities and stakeholders to ensure that the process remains peaceful, transparent and free from violence, safeguarding the integrity of student leadership and its role in promoting education and youth welfare.
