Guwahati: In an extraordinary gesture reflecting the scale of public grief, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the Bhogeswar Baruah Stadium in Sarusajai will remain open round-the-clock, enabling thousands of fans to bid farewell to legendary singer Zubeen Garg.
The Chief Minister said the decision was taken in view of the overwhelming outpouring of emotions across the state. “More and more people wish to see our beloved Zubeen one last time, and we deeply understand these sentiments. Therefore, Bhogeswar Baruah Stadium will remain open throughout the night today for the public to pay their respects to Zubeen. Tomorrow also, the mortal remains of Zubeen will be kept at Sarusajai for people to offer their homage,” he stated.

Earlier in the evening, Garg’s mortal remains were brought to the stadium, where thousands of grieving fans, supporters, and admirers gathered to pay tribute. Despite intermittent showers, the crowds stood undeterred—many queuing patiently with umbrellas, while others braved the rain without cover.
The stadium turned into a sea of emotion as people from all walks of life—students, artists, political leaders, and ordinary citizens—came together to honor the man regarded as the heartbeat of Assam.

The emotion-filled vigil is expected to continue through the night, as Assam collectively mourns the untimely passing of one of its most cherished cultural icons.
