Union Minister George Kurian Reviews Development Issues During Two-Day Visit to Tuensang

Kohima, March 2: Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying George Kurian held an interaction session with Heads of Offices under Nagaland’s Tuensang district at the DC’s Conference Hall on Monday, March 2.

Deputy Commissioner Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa welcomed the minister and conveyed gratitude on behalf of the people of Tuensang. Additional Deputy Commissioner Shelly Katiry presented a PowerPoint overview highlighting the district’s profile and ongoing initiatives.

During the meeting, Kurian reviewed a range of developmental issues, including Infant Mortality Rate, immunisation coverage, the Public Distribution System, skill development, nutrition programmes, PM-Kisan, PMAY-G, Self-Help Groups, the education system and the status of National Highway 202. He stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains committed to the development of the Northeast and assured that the Centre is prepared to extend necessary infrastructure and financial support for the welfare of the people.

Appreciating the efforts of district officials, the minister urged them to continue their work with sincerity and dedication. Earlier in the day, he visited St. John Higher Secondary School in Tuensang and interacted with students.

Kurian was on a two-day visit to Tuensang from March 1 to 2. As part of his itinerary, he inspected Thimka Fish Farm in Tuensang Village and interacted with local fish farmers. Mhomo Murry, DFO Tuensang, highlighted challenges faced by the department, including poor road connectivity, infrastructure gaps and the need for additional fishery ponds to increase production. He informed that more than 80 marginal fish farmers operate in and around the farm.

The minister examined the fishery ponds and hatchery tanks at the site and also visited the District Hospital and Parade Ground in Tuensang. In the evening, he met tribal leaders, civil society representatives and members of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Tuensang unit as part of his outreach programme.
