Jorhat: Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who also serves as the Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, attended the 26th Convocation Ceremony of the university held at Jorhat on Wednesday. On the occasion, the Governor called upon the graduating students to use their knowledge and expertise to empower farmers and strengthen the rural economy. Addressing the gathering, the Governor congratulated the graduating students and described Assam Agricultural University as one of the most prestigious agricultural institutions in the country. He highlighted the university’s significant role in advancing agriculture in Assam and across the Northeast.
Stating that Assam is predominantly an agriculture-based state, Acharya said the role of the university is crucial in promoting research, innovation and the adoption of modern technologies to strengthen the state’s agriculture-driven economy. He described the convocation as not only a celebration of academic success but also the beginning of a new journey of responsibility for the students. On the occasion, the Governor also congratulated Yanung Jamoh Lego, who was conferred with an honorary doctorate by the university.

Highlighting the importance of agricultural education, Acharya noted that agriculture has deep roots in India’s civilization and culture. Referring to ancient traditions and the teachings of Kautilya in the Arthashastra, he said the prosperity of a state has always been closely linked with agriculture. The Governor also spoke about the growing role of technologies such as agri-tech, drones, artificial intelligence and data-driven farming in transforming the agricultural sector. He encouraged students to explore entrepreneurship and develop innovative solutions that can make agriculture more profitable and sustainable. A total of 581 students received their degrees at the convocation ceremony. Among those present were Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota and AAU Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chandra Deka, along with faculty members and other dignitaries.
