Guwahati: Fifteen solar street lights have been installed for mitigation of human elephant conflict (HEC) by Aaranyak and Assam Forest Department at several locations under Lakhipur and Krishnai Forest Ranges and an adjacent location under Goalpara Sadar Forest range in Goalpara district of Assam.
The installation of solar street lights was carried out during Feb 24 and 25 last with financial support from Center for Species Survival-A unit of IUCN SSC, Asian Elephant Rapid Response Grant. These solar street lights are expected contributed substantially in respect of HEC mitigation and coexistence at the villagers will now be able to spot presence wild elephants at night in those illuminated areas from a distance which led to prevention of unwarranted confrontation with these animals,

Before the installation of the solar street lights, the local community of various locations were in panic situation as they could not realize the presence of wild elephant due to darkness as the Solar Street lights were installed in different villages such as Guriajar, Fofonga, Narayanpara under Krishnai Forest Range and Dhamor, Ambari, Bandarmatha, Pukhuripara, Besorkona, Sigri under Lakhipur Forest Range.
