Guwahati, March 15: The release of the second list of candidates by the Indian National Congress for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections has triggered internal unrest within the party, with resignations beginning to surface.
In the latest development, senior party member Kushal Kumar Sarmah has resigned from the party, citing dissatisfaction over the distribution of tickets.
Sarmah submitted his resignation to the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee shortly after the party announced its second list of candidates.
According to party sources, Sarmah had been seeking the Congress ticket from the New Guwahati constituency. However, the party leadership decided to field Santanu Borah as its official nominee from the seat.
Following the announcement, Sarmah expressed disappointment over the decision and stepped down from the primary membership of the Congress.
The Congress’ second list includes candidates for more than twenty constituencies across Assam. Among the prominent nominees are Kartik Chandra Ray from Golokganj, Wazed Ali Choudhury from Birsing Jarua, Amrit Badsha from Bilasipara and Mohibur Rohman from Mankachar.
The party has also nominated Abul Kalam Rasheed Alam from Goalpara East, Kishor Kumar Brahma from Dudhnai, Nurul Islam from Srijangram and Abdul Khaleque from Mandia.
In other key constituencies, Pranjit Choudhury will contest from Rangia, Rijumoni Talukdar from Mangaldai, and Jhilli Choudhury from Hojai.
Additional nominees include Batash Urang, Dr Sankar Jyoti Kutum, Sailen Sonowal, Devid Phukan, Bipul Gogoi and Sagorika Bora.
The list also includes Dhrubjyoti Purkayastha from Dholai and Aminur Rashid Choudhury from Karimganj South.
The party has indicated that several constituencies will be left for alliance partners as part of its broader electoral strategy. These include Bhawanipur-Sorbhog, Bajali, Palasbari, Guwahati Central, Goreswar, Morigaon and Barhampur, among others.
