Senior Congress Leader Girindra Bhuyan Resigns from Party, Cites Drift from Core Ideals

Guwahati, March 16: Senior Congress leader Girindra Bhuyan has resigned from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress, stepping down from all party responsibilities with immediate effect.

In a resignation letter dated March 15, 2026, addressed to Gaurav Gogoi, Bhuyan announced his decision to quit the party after decades of association. He stated that he had been a member of the Congress since 1985 and had served the organisation with sincerity and dedication for more than four decades.

During his tenure, Bhuyan held several organisational roles, including serving as Vice-President of the Sonitpur District Congress Committee. In his letter, however, he expressed concern that the party had moved away from its founding principles.

Bhuyan alleged that loyal grassroots workers were increasingly being sidelined, while money power, favouritism and internal groupism were dominating the party’s decision-making process. According to him, these trends were leaving little space for sincere workers, ordinary members and representatives from diverse communities.

He warned that such developments could weaken the party’s broader organisational structure, suggesting that the Congress risked becoming an organisation serving the interests of a limited group rather than functioning as a broad-based political platform.

The senior leader also criticised the leadership of Gogoi, claiming that what he described as “immature and disconnected leadership” could weaken the party’s organisation in Assam and leave loyal workers disillusioned.

Bhuyan was also considered a ticket aspirant from the Rangapara constituency ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
