Manipur Police Arrest UPPK Cadre, Arms Cache Recovered Near Indo-Myanmar Border

Imphal, March 20: Manipur Police on March 19 arrested an active cadre of the proscribed United People’s Party of Kangleipak during an operation in Mantripukhri under Imphal East district, as part of intensified action against insurgent networks in the valley.

The arrested individual has been identified as Chungkham Kiran Meitei alias Lepshinba (23), a resident of Khumbong Mayai Leikai under Patsoi police station in Imphal West district. Officials said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle militant activities in the region.

In a separate operation on the same day, security forces recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition from the general area of Molcham village under Molcham police station in Chandel district, a sensitive zone along the Indo-Myanmar border.

The seized items include an AK-47 rifle with two magazines, a 9mm carbine machine gun with a magazine, two grenade detonators, two additional magazines, two grenades, and 194 rounds of ammunition. Five Baofeng VHF radio sets along with USB chargers were also recovered.

Officials noted that the recovery highlights continued movement of weapons through hill districts, raising concerns over cross-border trafficking and possible regrouping of insurgent elements. Authorities have launched further investigations to establish potential links between the arrested cadre and the recovered arms.
