Tension Flares at KZC Chief’s Residence After Guwahati Talks with Manipur Government

Imphal, March 23: Security forces were deployed outside the residence of Henlianthang Thanglet on Monday after a group of local youths allegedly attempted to storm his house, prompting swift intervention to prevent escalation.

Officials said the situation was brought under control after security personnel dispersed the crowd, ensuring no further disturbance in the area. The incident comes a day after a crucial meeting between Yumnam Khemchand Singh and leaders of the Kuki-Zo Council in Guwahati.

The meeting, which lasted nearly one hour and 45 minutes, marked the first formal engagement between the Manipur government and the council since ethnic violence erupted in 2023. It was described as an initial step towards dialogue following prolonged tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.

During the interaction, the council raised multiple concerns, including ongoing tensions involving the Kuki and Tangkhul communities. It emphasised the need for justice for those affected by the violence, stating that accountability remains central to any meaningful peace process.

The delegation also called for maintaining the buffer zone until a political resolution is reached and urged authorities to expedite the ongoing Suspension of Operations (SoO) talks to help restore stability.

Responding to the issues, the Chief Minister outlined measures taken by the government to manage the situation and maintain order, while acknowledging the council’s willingness to engage in dialogue.

No formal decisions or agreements were reached during the meeting, with both sides treating it as a preliminary step. Ethnic violence in Manipur began on May 3, 2023, following protests linked to demands for Scheduled Tribe status for the Meitei community, and has since resulted in casualties, displacement, and widespread disruption across the state.
