Assam Polls 2026: BJP, AGP Intensify Ground Campaign as Electoral Battle Heats Up

Guwahati, March 23: Political mobilisation has accelerated across Assam ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, with the Bharatiya Janata Party and its ally Asom Gana Parishad stepping up outreach efforts to consolidate voter support.

AGP candidate Tapan Das, addressing supporters in Guwahati, underlined his long-standing association with the party, linking his candidature to decades of organisational work. He expressed gratitude to party leaders including Atul Bora, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Dilip Saikia, while appealing to voters for support.

The AGP has announced 26 candidates for the polls, with Atul Bora set to contest from Bokakhat and executive president Keshab Mahanta fielded from Kaliabor. As part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the party is aiming to retain its political relevance while expanding its presence beyond the nine seats it currently holds in the Assembly.

Under the alliance arrangement, the BJP will contest 89 constituencies, while the Bodoland People’s Front has been allotted 11 seats. The ruling coalition is seeking to replicate its previous electoral performance even as opposition parties attempt to mount a stronger challenge.

From the BJP, Guwahati candidate Vijay Gupta also emphasised the importance of public backing, expressing gratitude to the party’s central leadership and seeking voter support ahead of the elections.

The 126-member Assam Assembly is expected to witness a direct contest between the BJP-led NDA and the Indian National Congress. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is aiming for a third consecutive term for the alliance, while the Congress is working to regain lost ground after its previous electoral setback.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the NDA — comprising the BJP, AGP and the United People’s Party Liberal — secured 75 seats, including 60 won by the BJP. The Congress-led alliance, which included the All India United Democratic Front, the Bodoland People’s Front and Left parties, managed 16 seats.

With over 2.2 crore registered voters and a high turnout of 86.2 per cent recorded in the last election, political parties are expected to focus on voter mobilisation, alliance dynamics and constituency-level issues as campaigning gains further momentum.
