Fake Aadhaar, Voter IDs Seized at Imphal Airport; Two Held Over Suspected Identity Fraud Network

Imphal, March 24: Authorities at Imphal Airport have apprehended a 22-year-old man and a juvenile after recovering multiple forged identification documents during a routine security check on March 23, raising concerns over a possible organised identity fraud network.

The accused, identified as Alam Azad (22) from Lilong Atoukhong Maning Leikai in Thoubal district, was detained along with the minor after officials detected discrepancies in their documents during verification. A detailed inspection led to the seizure of several fake Aadhaar cards and voter identity cards.

Officials said the recovered documents carried different names and personal details but featured identical photographs, suggesting a deliberate attempt to create multiple identities. The pattern has prompted investigators to examine the possibility of coordinated fabrication and distribution of forged IDs.

Preliminary findings indicate that the documents may have been intended for unlawful purposes, including illegal travel or evasion of law enforcement. Authorities are also probing the source of the fake IDs and whether the accused were linked to a wider syndicate involved in identity fraud.

The involvement of a juvenile has further heightened concerns about the use of minors in such operations. Both individuals remain in custody as investigators continue efforts to trace potential accomplices and determine the full scope of the network.
