Guwahati, March 24: The Government of Assam has announced a paid holiday across the state on April 9, 2026, the day scheduled for polling in the Assembly elections, to facilitate greater voter participation.
The decision, notified by the Labour Welfare Department, will apply to a wide range of establishments, including factories, tea plantations, shops, commercial units, entertainment venues, contractor establishments, firms, industries, as well as financial and banking institutions.
The move has been taken in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which mandates granting leave to employees to enable them to cast their votes.
Officials said the notification follows directions from the Election Department, with the objective of ensuring that all eligible voters are able to participate in the electoral process without work-related constraints.
