Akhil Gogoi begins indefinite sit-in, demands CBI probe into Zubeen’s death

Guwahati: Demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of Zubeen Garg, the Raijor Dal led by its President and MLA Sibsagar, Akhil Gogoi today launched an indefinite hunger strike at Cachal in Guwahati. Addressing mediapersons Akhil Gogoi said, “We demand the immediate arrest of all individuals allegedly involved in the case. The agitation would continue until the key accused are arrested”.

The Raijor Dal President further accused the state government of deliberately adopting delaying tactics to shield the culprits. He questioned the state’s police administration stating, “when petty thieves are subjected to encounters, why are those accused in Zubeen Garg’s death allowed to hold facebook live sessions and allowed to enjoy Durga puja holidays”?

He further alleged that, “No arrest has been made so far despite eleven days having passed since Garg’s death. Instead of issuing Red Corner Notices, only Look-Out Notices have been served as of yet, describing the whole incident as an attempt to mislead the public. The ruling BJP is seeking to prevent the incident from affecting its electoral prospects in 2026”.

Earlier in a post on social media today, Akhil Gogoi stated, “Citizens of Assam, with your blessings, I begin my protest today seeking justice for Zubeen Garg’s death. Our demands are clear- a CBI probe into Zubeen’s death, an ED inquiry into the North East India Festival’s finances and the immediate arrest of Siddharth, Shyamkanu Mahanta and all present with Zubeen in Singapore. I believe the government is reluctant to act and bring the accused to justice”.

Gogoi also met Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya earlier in the day, demanding a CBI probe and the immediate arrest of all those involved, including Siddharth Sharma, the manager of Zubeen Garg, alongside Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organiser of the North East India Festival event in Singapore. “The hunger strike starting today shall continue until the Chief Minister himself comes to Chachal and addresses the people directly”, said Akhil Gogoi.
