88th Birth anniversary of Laxminath Bezbarua observed in Tezpur

Tezpur: Tezpur Sahitya Sabha paid rich tribute to pioneer of modern Assamese literature Rasaraj Lakshminath Bezbaroa on his 88th death anniversary on Thursday. Taking part in the event organised by Tezpur Sahitya Sabha, noted novelist and former president of the Sonitpur Zila Sahitya Sabha, Dr. Bhupen Saikia, described Bezbaroa as “the first truly modern figure of Assam’s modern era.” He highlighted that Bezbaroa, a key architect of the Jonaki era of Assamese literature, made multidimensional contributions that continue to enrich modern Assamese society and literary traditions. Dr. Saikia also noted that the day marks the death anniversary of Mitradev Mahanta, the creator of the iconic song Siro Chenehi Mor Bhaxa Janani. He remarked that Bezbaroa’s diverse literary works remain a “life-giving elixir” for Assamese literature.

          The programme began with floral tributes and lighting of lamps at the bust of Bezbaroa, located near Padum Pukhuri in Tezpur, in front of the main branch of the State Bank of India. Tezpur Sahitya Sabha secretary Dr Pallab Bhattachaya remembering the enduring legacy of the literary stalwart in his speech conducted the entire event,  

          Among others present were vice-president of the Sabha Dwijen Nath, who offered floral tributes, along with writer Nabin Chandra Lahkar, Mrigen Chandra Bora, Satyadev Sarma, Jitumoni Dev Choudhury and Bhupen Baruah and several other dignitaries.
