Russell Peters Performs in Shillong Tonight, Marking Northeast India’s First Major International Stand-Up Event

Shillong, March 27: Shillong is set to host Northeast India’s first major international stand-up comedy event on March 27, with global comedian Russell Peters performing to a sold-out audience at the Lariti International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture.

Peters arrived in the city earlier in the day and spent time exploring local attractions ahead of his 6:00 PM show. Organisers have advised attendees to reach the venue by 5:00 PM to access food stalls and other facilities amid high demand.

Currently on his India tour, Peters selected Shillong as his only stop in the Northeast. Known for his observational humour and cross-cultural storytelling, he has performed to large audiences across North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia.

The event is being seen as a milestone in Shillong’s emergence as a live entertainment destination. Over the past decade, the city has strengthened its reputation as India’s “Music Hub”, hosting major events such as the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival and welcoming international artists. The performance also follows a week of high-profile events, including a major rock concert, contributing to the city’s cultural tourism.

Jason Manners of Rockski said the response to the show has been overwhelming, noting that audiences in the region are experiencing a global stand-up act of this scale for the first time. He described Shillong as a growing destination for world-class entertainment.

Peters, commenting on his visit, said he had heard about Shillong and was enjoying the atmosphere, adding that performing in a new location with strong audience energy makes the experience particularly meaningful.

Brenda Pakyntein, Director of Tourism for the Meghalaya government, said the event reflects the state’s growing appeal as a centre for cultural and entertainment tourism, highlighting the increasing demand for international live performances among local audiences.
