Manipur CM Stresses Peace and Governance Amid Tensions in Ukhrul

Imphal, March 30: A high-level review meeting chaired by Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on March 29 underscored the importance of unity, peace and effective governance, even as tensions continued in Ukhrul district following recent violence.

The meeting, attended by BJP legislators at the state Secretariat, focused on strengthening what the Chief Minister described as people-centric governance and responsive administration, aimed at translating public expectations into concrete outcomes. Discussions also explored ways to enhance the reach, efficiency and impact of development programmes to ensure broader delivery across communities.

Singh emphasised the need to foster unity and collective progress, noting that such values have historically helped the state navigate challenging periods. He also commended party MLAs for their commitment and sense of responsibility in addressing public concerns.

The review comes against the backdrop of a tense law-and-order situation in Ukhrul, where violence was reported on Sunday. Responding to the developments, the Chief Minister appealed to communities, including the Tangkhul Naga, to exercise restraint and help maintain peace.

Expressing concern over the incident, he said violence cannot provide solutions and urged all sides to avoid confrontation. He added that the government is taking the matter seriously and that due legal process will be followed.

The unrest follows earlier clashes in February in Litan village involving Tangkhul and Kuki groups, which had led to a temporary suspension of internet services in the district due to heightened tensions.

Officials said efforts are ongoing to stabilise the situation and prevent further escalation, as the state leadership continues to stress peace and inclusive development.
