Guwahati, March 30: Nitin Nabin on March 30 alleged that the Indian National Congress had facilitated the entry of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh into Assam during its tenure, claiming that the trend has been reversed under the BJP government in the state.
Addressing a public rally in Morigaon district in support of party candidates ahead of the Assembly elections, Nabin said the BJP-led administration has taken steps to curb infiltration and initiate action against illegal immigrants. He further accused the Congress of supporting such elements and linked the issue to broader concerns of national security and demographic balance in Assam.
The BJP leader also criticised Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over an incident in Delhi, alleging that he declined to wear a traditional Assamese ‘gamocha’ when offered. Nabin claimed the act had hurt sentiments in the state, contrasting it with Gandhi’s visits to religious places where he wears customary attire.
Highlighting the BJP’s governance record, Nabin said Assam has witnessed significant development over the past decade. He contrasted this with what he described as an earlier period marked by extremism, instability and economic challenges, urging voters to ensure such conditions do not return.
Polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with counting of votes set for May 4.
