DK Shivakumar Counters Amit Shah, Predicts Two-Thirds Majority for Congress in Assam Polls

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has asserted that the Indian National Congress will secure a two-thirds majority in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, rejecting projections made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah of a sweeping BJP victory.

Speaking amid intensifying campaign activity, Shivakumar said the electoral outcome would favour Congress, claiming that while the BJP anticipates a dominant mandate, the results would instead see Congress winning two-thirds of the seats, leaving the BJP with a significantly smaller share.

The exchange underscores the escalating political rhetoric ahead of the polls, with both parties expressing confidence in securing a decisive mandate.

At a rally in Nalbari on March 29, Shah criticised the Congress, accusing it of pursuing vote-bank politics and failing to address illegal immigration. He alleged that several districts, including Dhubri, have been heavily affected by infiltration, and claimed that previous Congress governments had allowed such trends to persist.

Shah further stated that the current administration led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strengthened border controls and reclaimed large tracts of encroached land. He also highlighted improvements in law and order, asserting that incidents of violence have declined over the past decade.

Emphasising cultural identity, Shah said the state’s land and heritage must be protected, and reiterated the BJP’s plan to introduce a Uniform Civil Code in Assam, describing it as a step towards ensuring equality.

Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies is scheduled for April 9, with counting set for May 4. The election is expected to witness a direct contest between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and the Congress, with the ruling alliance seeking a third consecutive term while the opposition aims for a return to power.
