Currently there is a wholesale attack on the democratic system in India: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha in India and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi yesterday lashed out at the Indian democratic system claiming a “wholesale attack on the democratic system” in India currently under the leadership of Narendra Modi.

Speaking at an event in EIA University in Medellin, Colombia, Rahul Gandhi stressed upon allowing different traditions to thrive as important to the development of the country. He also emphasized upon the fact that India also carries a very old spiritual tradition and a thought system with profound ideas that are useful in today’s world and that there is a lot that the country can offer in terms of tradition and also the way of thinking.

“India has multiple religions, traditions and languages. India is actually a conversation between all its people. Different ideas, religions and traditions require space. The best method for creating that space is the democratic system”.

“Currently there is a wholesale attack on the democratic system in India. The other risks include different religions, different arts and cultures, different traditions, different languages etc. Allowing these different traditions to thrive, giving them space to express themselves, is very crucial for a country like India. We cannot do what China does, which is to suppress people and run an authoritarian system”, Mr Gandhi added.

Rahul Gandhi, who is on a four- nation tour of South America, is expected to interact with political leaders, university students and members of the business community. During his visit to Colombo, he also met Colombian President Senate Lidio Gracia and exchanged words.
