Sivasagar Turns Battleground as Akhil Gogoi Faces NDA’s Dual Challenge in Assam Polls

Guwahati, April 4: As the 2026 Assam Assembly elections draw closer, the Sivasagar constituency has emerged as a closely watched political contest, with a high-stakes triangular fight shaping up between regional leadership and NDA-backed candidates.

Incumbent MLA and Akhil Gogoi, who heads the Raijor Dal, is seeking to retain his seat amid a coordinated challenge from the National Democratic Alliance. The NDA has fielded two contenders — Prodip Hazarika of the Asom Gana Parishad and Kushal Dowari of the Bharatiya Janata Party — turning the constituency into a complex electoral battleground.

Gogoi, who won the seat in 2021 by a margin of over 11,000 votes, has built his political identity around grassroots activism and opposition to key government policies. His detention under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act during the anti-CAA protests further reinforced his image as a mass leader, strengthening his support base in the constituency.

The NDA’s strategy centres on consolidating pro-government votes that were previously divided, a factor that had contributed to Gogoi’s earlier victory. However, the presence of two alliance-linked candidates has introduced the risk of vote splitting, potentially impacting the overall outcome.

Sivasagar, considered the cultural and historical core of Assam with deep roots in the Ahom legacy, presents a politically aware electorate comprising the Ahom community, tea tribe workers, and a significant middle-class population. This diverse demographic profile makes the contest highly competitive and sensitive to both local concerns and broader political narratives.

While Dowari has focused his campaign on development and law-and-order issues, his candidature has also attracted scrutiny over past legal controversies, which Gogoi has sought to highlight. Meanwhile, Hazarika brings administrative experience and past electoral success in the constituency, adding further complexity to the race.

Political observers suggest that the final result may hinge on whether NDA supporters rally behind a single candidate or remain divided. A split vote could favour Gogoi, while consolidation within the alliance may shift the balance. With polling scheduled for April 26 and counting on May 4, Sivasagar is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the broader electoral outcome in Assam.
