Khowang Turns Key Battleground as BJP Faces AJP Challenge in Upper Assam

Guwahati, April 5: The Khowang Assembly constituency has emerged as a high-stakes electoral battleground in Upper Assam for the 2026 polls, reflecting shifting political dynamics across the region’s tea belt.

The contest is centred on a direct face-off between sitting BJP MLA Chakradhar Gogoi and Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad, who is contesting as part of a broader opposition effort to challenge the BJP’s hold in Upper Assam.

Chakradhar Gogoi, seeking a third term, is banking on development works and his outreach among Ahom and Tea Tribe communities. His campaign has highlighted infrastructure projects and the provincialisation of schools in tea garden areas. In contrast, Lurinjyoti Gogoi has framed the election around regional identity issues, drawing support particularly from youth and voters concerned about Clause 6 and related demands.

The entry of Independent candidate Biju Dowarah has added a new dimension to the contest, with his local influence seen as a potential factor in splitting votes.

The constituency’s electorate, dominated by tea garden workers and rural populations, is expected to play a decisive role. Key issues include wage revision for tea workers, land rights, and demands for Scheduled Tribe status for certain communities, making the contest increasingly competitive.

Earlier known as Moran, the seat was renamed and reorganised following the 2023 delimitation exercise, altering its demographic composition and forcing candidates to recalibrate their campaign strategies in newly added areas.

Historically a Congress stronghold, the constituency shifted to the BJP in 2016, with Chakradhar Gogoi retaining it in 2021. Despite this, a strong opposition base continues to persist.

Senior BJP leaders, including Sarbananda Sonowal, have campaigned for the incumbent, while Lurinjyoti Gogoi has focused his outreach on tea garden regions and rural voters.

With development initiatives such as land rights distribution, road upgrades and drinking water projects influencing voter sentiment, Khowang is being closely watched as an indicator of broader political trends in Upper Assam.

Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam is scheduled for April 9, with counting set for May 4.
