Guwahati, April 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 6 alleged multiple “anomalies” in documents circulated by Congress leaders, claiming they were fabricated and warning of legal consequences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Responding to claims made by Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi, Sarma said the two leaders held “coordinated press conferences” in Delhi and Guwahati based on what he described as “fraudulent material”.
Highlighting alleged discrepancies, the Chief Minister pointed to documents linked to a purported United Arab Emirates Golden Visa. He stated that the UAE issues visas—not passports—to non-citizens, questioning the authenticity of the material in circulation. He also cited inconsistencies in identification numbers, including incorrect birth details.
Sarma further claimed that the visa number referenced in the document belonged to an Egyptian national, suggesting possible identity misuse. He also pointed to visible differences between what he termed original and edited versions, including identical features and missing elements, which he said indicated manipulation.
Additionally, he alleged that the images were sourced from a Pakistan-linked social media group where lost identification documents had been shared.
Accusing Congress leaders of attempting to defame him, Sarma said such materials could attract stringent penal provisions related to fraud and forgery. He also alleged attempts to create a morphed telephonic conversation involving him and minister Pijush Hazarika, linking it to a recent controversy involving singer Zubeen Garg.
Drawing a parallel with the St. Kitts forgery scandal, he claimed the episode reflected a similar attempt to implicate individuals using fabricated documents.
Sarma said he would approach the police and courts over the matter, adding that such actions would have legal consequences. He also reiterated concerns about possible external interference in Assam’s political environment, alleging Pakistan’s involvement. The Indian National Congress has not yet issued a detailed response to the allegations.
