Unending Power Cuts Leave Kakopather Residents in the Dark, Demand Urgent Action

Kakopather: In an age where electricity powers everything from lights to smartphones, uninterrupted power supply has become a basic necessity. Yet, for the residents of Kakopather, frequent and unannounced power cuts have turned daily life into a constant struggle.

Despite government assurances of round-the-clock electricity, the ground reality tells a different story. Residents complain that erratic power supply has disrupted household chores, hampered business operations, and severely affected students preparing for exams. The situation becomes unbearable during peak hours, leaving families in darkness and small traders counting their losses.

Adding to their woes, power fluctuations have reportedly damaged electrical appliances, causing financial strain on many households. “We’ve lodged several complaints to the electricity department, but nothing concrete has been done,” said a frustrated local resident.

The installation of smart meters has further intensified anger among the public. Locals allege that electricity bills have increased disproportionately, even during days marked by hours-long outages. “The amount deducted is higher than normal even though there’s hardly any power for several hours a day,” a shopkeeper lamented.

In recent months, the situation has worsened to the point where even a brief spell of rain or thunder results in prolonged power cuts—often lasting the entire night. With temperatures soaring, residents describe the experience as “near-death suffering.”

Kakopather, being close to the Sub-Divisional Engineer’s Office and having an additional control room at Koomsong Tea Garden, was expected to enjoy better service. However, locals claim that no visible steps have been taken to improve the situation. A major reason behind the poor maintenance, they allege, is the shortage of linemen. “Only a few workers, including one permanent staff, are left to handle emergencies, causing dangerous delays every time a line snaps,” a villager noted.

As most residents live in rural setups without access to generators or inverters, the unreliable power supply has created severe hardship. The people of Kakopather have now appealed to higher authorities to take immediate and effective action to resolve the crisis and ensure a stable, uninterrupted flow of electricity to the region.du or The Sentinel)?
