Imphal, April 11: Security forces have recovered a large cache of arms, explosives, and communication equipment from a forested area near Taijang village under Chakpikarong Police Station in Manipur’s Chandel district on April 10, in a major boost to ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
The operation, carried out as part of intensified search and area domination exercises by the Manipur Police and security forces, is believed to have averted potential militant activities in the sensitive border region.
According to official sources, the seized cache included sophisticated weapons such as an AK-47 assault rifle and an MP-5 rifle along with a magazine. Several country-made firearms, including carbines, single-barrel breech-loading (SBBL) guns, and Lathod guns, were also recovered. In addition, multiple Pompi mortars and shells were found, raising concerns about possible plans for coordinated attacks.
Security personnel also recovered around four kilograms of suspected improvised explosive device (IED) material, along with 26 rounds of ammunition of various calibres. The presence of five Baofeng walkie-talkie sets pointed to the likelihood of planned militant operations involving organised communication.
Officials stated that the seizure underscores the continued vigilance of security forces in curbing insurgent activity in the region, which lies close to the international border and has historically remained vulnerable to such threats. The timely recovery is believed to have significantly reduced the risk of potential attacks targeting both civilians and security personnel.
An investigation has been initiated to determine the origin and ownership of the recovered arms and to identify the groups involved. Meanwhile, security forces have intensified surveillance and search operations in nearby areas to prevent any resurgence of militant activity.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Manipur and have urged the public to cooperate with security agencies by sharing any relevant information.
