US Brokers 10-Day Israel–Lebanon Ceasefire Amid Rising Regional Tensions

News Desk: A fragile window for peace has emerged in West Asia after United States President Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, aimed at de-escalating hostilities and creating space for broader diplomatic negotiations. The temporary truce comes despite sharp divisions among key stakeholders. The Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah has called for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained that Israeli troops will continue their presence in southern Lebanon, underscoring ongoing security concerns.

Iran has cautiously welcomed the ceasefire. According to statements from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the development is being viewed as part of a broader understanding with Washington to temporarily pause escalating tensions across the region. The response signals Tehran’s willingness to engage diplomatically, even as mistrust remains high.

However, the lead-up to the ceasefire was marked by intense violence. Israeli forces launched heavy strikes across southern Lebanon just hours before the truce came into effect on Thursday night. Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that at least three people were killed in a village in the Sidon district, while eight others lost their lives in the Zahrani area.

Amid these developments, President Trump reiterated that negotiations to end the broader conflict involving Iran are “very close” to fruition. He indicated that talks with Tehran could resume in Islamabad as early as this weekend, suggesting a potential diplomatic breakthrough on multiple fronts. On the military side, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a stern warning to Iran, stating that American forces remain ready to resume combat operations if negotiations fail. He also asserted U.S. naval dominance over maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.

The situation remains fluid, with the ceasefire offering only a temporary reprieve in a volatile region. Observers caution that without sustained diplomatic engagement and compromise from all sides, the risk of renewed conflict remains high.
