Manipur Marks Khongjom Day with State Honours, Pays Tribute to 1891 War Heroes

Imphal, April 23: Manipur on Thursday solemnly observed Khongjom Day at the Khongjom War Memorial, honouring the martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur War.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh led the ceremony, laying floral wreaths at the memorial in the presence of senior officials and members of the public. The observance featured full ceremonial honours, including a Guard of Honour, General Salute, Reverse Arms, the sounding of the Last Post, a two-minute silence, and concluding drills.

Tributes were also paid at the statue of Paona Brajabashi with a gun salute, while traditional tarpan rituals were performed at the Khongjom River. Sankirtana performances formed part of the commemorative proceedings.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor described the Battle of Khongjom as a symbol of courage, honour and determination, noting that Manipuri warriors chose to resist despite being outnumbered and inadequately equipped. He said the occasion serves both as remembrance and reflection, urging citizens to uphold unity, integrity, communal harmony and respect for the rule of law.

The Chief Minister highlighted the legacy of leaders such as Kulachandra Singh, Tikendrajit Singh, Paona Brajabashi, Chongtha Mia and Chinglensana, stating that their sacrifices safeguarded Manipur’s sovereignty and identity. He also referred to the recent Tronglaobi incident, informing that the government has engaged with affected families and extended assistance, while appealing for calm amid ongoing protests.

The programme began with Sankirtana by artistes of the Manipur State Kala Akademi, followed by cultural performances including Khongjom Parva and a stage presentation titled “Paona”. The event was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Art and Culture Minister Kh. Loken Singh, legislators, senior civil and police officials, and security personnel.

The annual observance remains a significant cultural and historical occasion, commemorating the valour and sacrifice of Manipuri soldiers.
