Shillong, April 28: Authorities in Shillong have issued a weather advisory warning of thunderstorms, lightning and intense rainfall across East Khasi Hills district from April 27 to May 1, following a forecast by the India Meteorological Department indicating a period of potentially disruptive weather conditions.
The adverse weather began on April 27 with very heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph. Similar conditions are expected to continue from April 28 to 30, with thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain accompanied by winds of 40–50 kmph. On May 1, the district is likely to witness continued thunderstorms and rainfall, with gusts of up to 50 kmph.
Officials have urged residents to exercise caution, warning of possible flash floods, particularly in areas near rivers and streams. Precautionary measures include securing loose materials such as tin sheets, bricks and signage that may be displaced by strong winds. Authorities have also advised switching off electrical appliances during lightning activity to minimise the risk of damage and injury.
The advisory cautions against walking or driving through waterlogged areas due to the danger of strong undercurrents. Residents have been asked to avoid rivers, waterfalls and streams during the alert period and to maintain a safe distance from electric poles and power lines to prevent accidents.
Emergency assistance will be available through helpline number 112. Authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines until weather conditions stabilise.
