‘Act East, Act Fast’: PM Modi Outlines Northeast Growth Push at Sikkim Statehood Event

Gangtok, April 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 28 said the Centre is moving beyond its “Act East” policy with a sharper emphasis on execution, describing the Northeast as India’s “Ashtalakshmi” symbolising prosperity and opportunity.

Addressing the closing ceremony of Sikkim’s 50th statehood celebrations, Modi said the government is now “resolved to Act East, Act Fast”, signalling an accelerated push for infrastructure and tourism-led development across the region.

Highlighting tourism as a key driver of Sikkim’s economy, he stressed the importance of improved connectivity to increase visitor inflow. Plans outlined include an expressway linking Bagdogra in West Bengal with the state, a ring road in Gangtok, and additional projects such as ropeways, skyways and an expressway towards Nathula to ease access to strategic and tourist destinations.

Referring to Sikkim’s environmental strengths, Modi said its clean surroundings reflect a strong commitment to conservation. He pointed to opportunities for sustainable growth through organic farming and eco-wellness tourism, noting that the state’s natural and cultural assets offer significant potential.

Efforts are also under way to expand tourism infrastructure, including the development of around 1,000 homestays and the promotion of adventure tourism. Modi described Sikkim as embodying the spirit of national unity, reiterating that it reflects the idea of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”.

Encouraging travellers to explore the state’s biodiversity, he highlighted its rich variety of orchids and natural landscapes, referring to Sikkim as the “heaven of the East”.

The Prime Minister also underscored a renewed focus on sports development, citing investments in infrastructure to support young athletes, particularly in disciplines such as football and archery. He said the government is working to identify and nurture talent in the region.

Criticising previous administrations led by the Indian National Congress, Modi alleged that Sikkim’s development needs, particularly in healthcare, had been neglected. He added that the current government is prioritising access to quality and affordable healthcare services as part of its broader development agenda.
