93-Year-Old Assam Man Recovers After 24-Hour Unconsciousness Following Massive Bee Attack in Sivasagar

Sivasagar, April 30: A 93-year-old resident of Dimow in Assam’s Sivasagar district has made a notable recovery after remaining unconscious for nearly 24 hours following a severe bee attack, in an incident that has also drawn attention to a reported rise in such cases linked to changing climate patterns.

The elderly man, identified as Badan Koka, was attacked on March 21 by an estimated swarm of around 500 bees while working in his backyard. The assault left him critically injured and significantly weakened. Although initial medical assistance was arranged and he was brought home, his condition worsened shortly afterwards, as he became unresponsive and stopped speaking, causing alarm among family members.

He was subsequently taken to Dimow Rural Hospital the following day, where doctors carried out preliminary examinations. Despite the absence of advanced diagnostic tools such as CT scan facilities, attending physicians relied on clinical assessment and observation to rule out the possibility of a stroke.

Given the limitations of rural healthcare infrastructure, doctors opted to continue treatment at the hospital rather than refer him elsewhere. The patient was administered medication, fluids and placed under close monitoring. Within 24 hours, he regained consciousness, and subsequent complications were managed effectively, leading to a steady recovery.

Medical staff involved in the case said timely intervention and careful clinical judgement were key to the outcome, while also noting the cooperation of the patient’s family throughout the treatment process.

Experts have pointed to a growing number of aggressive bee attack incidents in parts of Assam, attributing the trend in part to shifting climatic conditions. The case has underscored both the emerging environmental concerns and the capacity of rural healthcare systems to manage critical emergencies despite resource constraints.
