Guwahati, April 30: Assam Police have arrested a driver in connection with a fatal road accident near B Borooah College in Guwahati’s Ulubari locality, where a 52-year-old woman lost her life earlier this week.
The accused, identified as Jyotirmoy Nath, was taken into custody on April 29 by traffic personnel from Paltan Bazar Police Station. Police confirmed that the mini truck allegedly involved in the incident has also been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
The accident occurred on Monday evening at around 6:30 pm when the victim, Sita Devi, was crossing the road. According to police, she was first hit by a two-wheeler and was subsequently run over by another vehicle, resulting in critical injuries.
She was immediately rushed by local residents to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicles involved fled the scene following the collision. However, CCTV cameras installed in the area reportedly captured the sequence of events, aiding investigators in tracing the accused.
Police said further inquiries are underway to establish the precise circumstances of the crash and determine the role of other vehicles involved.
The incident has once again highlighted rising concerns over road safety in Guwahati, with residents also pointing to delays in emergency response. Family members of the deceased said the loss has compounded their grief, coming shortly after the recent death of her husband.
