Violence in Dhubri Sparks Protests as Anti-Drug Confrontation Leaves Ward Member Injured

Dhubri, May 1: Heavy security deployment was reported across Dhubri district on May 1 after a violent confrontation linked to alleged narcotics activity triggered widespread protests, road blockades and multiple injuries.

According to local sources, tensions flared when a ward member from the Jhagrapar Gaon Panchayat area visited the residence of a suspected drug operator, reportedly seeking an end to alleged illegal activities in the locality. During the confrontation, the ward member was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon and sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to Dhubri Medical College and Hospital, where he remains under treatment.

The incident quickly escalated as news of the assault spread, drawing large crowds to the area. Protests intensified and clashes reportedly broke out between local residents and members of the accused family. Police personnel intervened and took the family of Ashraful Haque into custody in an effort to control the situation.

Public anger continued to mount, with demonstrators demanding strict action against those involved in the attack and calling for a broader crackdown on alleged drug networks operating in the region. The agitation disrupted normal life, with protesters blocking key roads and surrounding police vehicles, effectively halting movement in parts of the district.

A local gaon panchayat representative, Mizanur Rahman, said the unrest reflected growing frustration over the impact of drugs on the younger population, adding that residents were demanding decisive action against those responsible.

Senior police officials remained deployed in the area and engaged in discussions with community leaders to restore normalcy. Authorities confirmed that legal proceedings are underway while efforts continue to defuse tensions and reopen affected routes.
