BJP Set for Decisive Return in Assam, NDA Dominates Early Trends in 2026 Polls

Guwahati, May 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party is poised to return to power in Assam, establishing a commanding lead as counting continued on May 4 for the 2026 Assembly elections. The party has crossed the majority mark of 64, indicating a clear mandate rather than a narrow advantage.

According to trends released by the Election Commission of India, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has maintained a strong lead across regions, reflecting sustained voter support for the ruling party’s governance. The scale of the lead suggests a consolidation of its electoral base.

The outcome signals a setback for the Indian National Congress and its allies, which have struggled to regain traction despite leadership changes and an aggressive campaign. Early trends indicate challenges for the opposition in reconnecting with key voter groups, particularly in Upper Assam.

A key test for the opposition was the alignment of prominent Ahom leaders — Gaurav Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi and Lurinjyoti Gogoi — aimed at consolidating regional support. However, early results suggest the strategy has not delivered the intended outcome.

In Jorhat, Gaurav Gogoi lost to BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami by over 23,000 votes. In Khowang, Lurinjyoti Gogoi trailed BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi, while in Sibsagar, Akhil Gogoi held a narrower lead over BJP candidate Kushal Dowari after multiple rounds.

The BJP’s performance indicates that its influence in key regional belts remains intact despite targeted opposition efforts.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state had witnessed a significant transformation under BJP rule and attributed the party’s performance to its focus on development and cultural identity. He also launched a sharp critique of the opposition, questioning its ability to regain political ground.

As per the latest figures, the BJP was leading in 79 seats, while Congress was ahead in 23. The Bodoland People’s Front led in 10 seats, followed by the Asom Gana Parishad with nine. The All India United Democratic Front was ahead in two seats, while Raijor Dal and the United People’s Party Liberal were leading in two and one seats respectively.

With counting still underway, the BJP appears firmly on track to retain power, while the opposition faces renewed scrutiny over its electoral strategy and diminishing support base.
