Jahar Chakraborty Wins Dharmanagar By-Poll by Nearly 18,000 Votes, BJP Consolidates Position in Tripura

Agartala, May 4: Jahar Chakraborty of the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a decisive victory in the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election in Tripura, polling 24,291 votes and winning by a margin of nearly 18,000 votes.

The by-election in Dharmanagar, located in North Tripura district, was held on April 9 following the demise of BJP MLA and former Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen. Counting of votes commenced at 8 am on May 4 under tight security arrangements.

Following his victory, Chakraborty thanked voters for their continued support and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to development. He noted that the BJP had won successive elections in 2018, 2023 and now the by-poll, attributing the result to public confidence in the party’s governance. He added that Dharmanagar, the state’s second-largest city, would remain a priority for infrastructure and urban development.

In the contest, CPI(M) candidate Amitabh Datta secured 6,001 votes, while Congress nominee Chayan Bhattacharjee polled 5,936 votes.

Congratulating the winning candidate, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed gratitude to the electorate, stating that the outcome reflected strong public trust in the BJP. He added that the government remained committed to ensuring development, peace and progress in the region.
