Gauripur, May 5: The Indian National Congress registered its most decisive victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections from the Gauripur constituency, where Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar secured a massive margin of 1,19,097 votes, the highest achieved by the party in this election cycle.
The scale of the victory in Gauripur significantly outpaced other Congress wins, establishing it as the party’s strongest electoral pocket. The next closest margins were recorded in Jaleshwar at 1,09,688 votes and Samaguri at 1,08,310 votes, followed by Algapur-Katlicherra with a margin of 1,05,448 votes. While these constituencies also crossed the one-lakh mark, each trailed Gauripur by a notable margin, underscoring the exceptional nature of the result.
Other constituencies reflected comparatively moderate victories for the party. Chenga saw a margin of 87,349 votes, Karimganj South recorded 86,632 votes, and Chamaria registered a winning margin of 78,696. At the lower end of the spectrum, seats such as Nowboicha and Karimganj North were more closely contested, with margins of 23,751 and 26,003 votes respectively.
Despite these strong performances in select constituencies, the broader electoral outcome remained challenging for the Congress. The party secured only 19 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly, highlighting a clear contrast between its isolated landslide victories and its limited overall footprint across the state.
