Guwahati, May 5: Women’s representation in the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly remains limited and uneven, with the ruling alliance accounting for the overwhelming majority of elected female legislators.
Out of 126 members in the Assembly, only six are women, constituting approximately 4.8 per cent of the House. Of these, five belong to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, underscoring both the coalition’s electoral dominance and its disproportionate share of women representatives.
Within the ruling bloc, the Bharatiya Janata Party has three women MLAs—Nilima Devi, Rupali Langthasa, and Ajanta Neog. Its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, have one woman legislator each—Diptimayee Choudhury and Sewli Mohilary, respectively.
In contrast, the opposition benches include only one woman legislator, with Baby Begum representing the Indian National Congress. This comes despite the Congress securing 19 seats in the Assembly, highlighting a significant imbalance in gender representation within the opposition.
The composition of the new Assembly reflects a persistent structural gap in Assam’s political landscape, where women remain underrepresented across party lines. While the ruling alliance has consolidated its position electorally, the overall conversion of women candidates into elected representatives continues to remain low, limiting their presence in the state’s legislative process.
