Election Commission Lifts Model Code of Conduct in Assam After Completion of 2026 Assembly Polls

Guwahati, May 7: The Election Commission of India on May 7 announced the immediate withdrawal of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in Assam following the completion of the 2026 Assembly election process and formal declaration of results.

In an official communication issued on Wednesday, the Commission stated that the MCC, which had come into effect from the date of announcement of the election schedule, automatically ceases to operate once the electoral process is completed. The withdrawal in Assam came after Returning Officers formally declared the results of the Assembly elections.

The Commission also confirmed that the MCC has been lifted in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the Union Territory of Puducherry, along with by-elections conducted in several other states. However, the poll body clarified that the code will continue to remain in force in the 144-Falta Assembly Constituency of West Bengal, where fresh polling has been ordered.

With the MCC no longer in effect in Assam, the newly elected BJP-led NDA government and various state departments can now resume governance-related activities that were restricted during the election period. These include policy decisions, administrative approvals, project announcements and other official measures that cannot be undertaken while the code is in force.

The BJP-led NDA secured a third consecutive term in Assam after winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, reaffirming its political dominance in the state. The swearing-in ceremony of the new government is scheduled to take place on May 12 in Guwahati.
