Education, May 8: National Council of Educational Research and Training is preparing to introduce postgraduate and doctoral programmes in education after receiving deemed university status from the Centre.
Officials from the Ministry of Education said the institution planned to launch MA, postgraduate and PhD-level courses focused on education and teacher training. Preparations for the programmes were underway, though no timeline had been announced.
The Centre granted NCERT the status of an “Institution deemed to be University” under the “distinct category” in April 2026, allowing it to award undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees independently.
Officials said the new status would expand NCERT’s role beyond curriculum design and educational research by giving it academic autonomy to frame courses and confer degrees. The recognition will also cover the organisation’s six Regional Institutes of Education across the country.
The proposed courses are expected to focus on teacher education, curriculum studies and educational technology under the National Education Policy framework.
