Guwahati, May 14: Former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and current BJP MLA Bhupen Borah on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, accusing him of being disconnected from the aspirations and concerns of Assam’s indigenous communities.
In a post on X, Borah alleged that the Congress party was increasingly becoming “out of touch” with the sentiments of the “sons of the soil” and claimed that certain leaders were prioritising vote-bank politics over the protection of Assam’s identity, demographic balance and indigenous rights.
The BJP legislator also criticised Gogoi’s position on issues such as the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating that the Congress leader’s remarks reflected a lack of “depth and clarity” on matters of long-term national and social importance.
According to Borah, such political positions could raise concerns regarding the future demographic and cultural balance of the state.
Praising Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Borah said the BJP leader’s approach reflected “statesmanship” aimed at safeguarding Assam’s interests while ensuring balanced and responsible governance.
The remarks come amid a growing political debate in Assam surrounding the proposed UCC and issues linked to indigenous identity and demographic concerns ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
