Gaurav Gogoi Blasts Assam CM on Zubeen Garg Case, Predicts BJP Defeat

Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and MP Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of making “insensitive remarks” regarding the untimely death of singer-actor Zubeen Garg, stating that people across Assam are deeply hurt and dissatisfied with the government’s handling of the issue.

Speaking at a Seva Dal programme in Bongaigaon, Gogoi said the people of Assam would give their response in the 2026 Assembly elections. “The BJP, sensing its defeat, has already resorted to electoral malpractice,” he claimed.

Calling for justice for the artist, Gogoi demanded a fair and transparent investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death so that all facts and evidence could be presented before the court. He also emphasised the unity within the Congress party, asserting that the Assam Pradesh Congress and Pradesh Mahila Congress stood firmly together. “We in the Congress respect every mother of Assam,” Gogoi said.

The remarks came just two days after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a strong counterattack against Gogoi. On October 7, Sarma questioned Gogoi’s credibility to comment on Assamese identity and patriotism, referring to the citizenship status of his children.

“What justice will Gaurav Gogoi give to Zubeen? Zubeen is an Assamese and an Indian,” Sarma told reporters, alleging that Gogoi’s actions raised questions about his commitment to Assamese sentiment. “He has made his son a foreigner and now he’s waving the Indian flag. Then, change your citizenship,” the Chief Minister remarked.
