Nagaon, May 18: The human-elephant conflict in Assam’s Nagaon district has intensified, with a wild elephant continuing to trigger panic among residents in the Gendhali area of Samaguri amid reports of repeated damage to homes and farmlands.
According to local residents, the elephant has been moving through different parts of the area and carrying out destruction mainly during the night, creating a climate of fear among villagers. Several houses and agricultural fields have reportedly suffered damage in a series of incidents over recent days.
Residents alleged that the animal enters populated areas almost every night, causing extensive losses to property and crops. The recurring movement of the elephant through inhabited villages has heightened concerns among people living in the affected localities.
Locals also suspect that the same rogue elephant allegedly linked to the deaths of two persons in Samaguri on Friday may be behind the latest incidents in Gendhali. However, forest officials have not yet officially confirmed the claim.
Meanwhile, the Udmari Sub-Divisional Forest Office has been carrying out continuous efforts to push the elephant back towards the nearby hill areas. Despite repeated attempts by forest personnel, the animal has so far remained within or near populated regions.
The continuing incidents have once again highlighted concerns over the growing human-elephant conflict in the region, with local residents urging authorities to take immediate and effective steps to prevent further damage and ensure public safety.
