Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma cautioned that renaming the iconic Bogibeel Bridge after singer Zubeen Garg could spark unnecessary controversy, given the historical sensitivities attached to the structure’s naming process.

Addressing the media in Dibrugarh, the Chief Minister recalled that the bridge had initially been proposed to be named after historical figures such as Sati Sadhani and Swargadeo Sukaphaa before authorities decided to retain its geographical name — Bogibeel — to avoid disputes.

“The Bogibeel Bridge, as widely known, was initially proposed to be named after Sati Sadhani and later after Swargadeo Sukaphaa. Ultimately, to avoid complications, it was named after the location itself — Bogibeel,” Dr. Sarma said.

He noted that while Zubeen Garg remains one of Assam’s most cherished artistes and a “Pranor Shilpi,” naming the bridge after him could reignite old controversies involving revered historical personalities.

“In light of the recent situation, it has been suggested that cultural events could be named after Zubeen Garg, which can lead to controversy. Multiple events can carry the ‘ZG’ name, celebrating his contributions to Assamese music and culture, while avoiding any disputes linked to historical figures,” the Chief Minister added.

Dr. Sarma emphasized that the state government wishes to honour Zubeen Garg in a dignified and unifying manner. “Naming the bridge itself after Zubeen Garg, however, could easily lead to controversy, potentially involving all three names. Such a situation should be avoided,” he stated.
