Kaliabor, May 19: A wild elephant was found dead on the morning of May 19 at Lengteng No. 2 Basti in Assam’s Kaliabor, raising concerns among local residents and forest authorities over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to preliminary reports, villagers discovered the elephant’s carcass early in the day and informed the authorities. Soon after the discovery, allegations surfaced from a section of local residents claiming that unidentified individuals may have illegally connected an electric power source, leading to the animal’s death by electrocution. However, officials have not yet confirmed the cause of death.
Following the incident, officials from the Western Range of the Salna Forest Division reached the spot and initiated preliminary investigation procedures. Forest personnel are expected to examine the site and assess whether the death resulted from electrocution or any other form of human intervention.
The incident has once again brought attention to the recurring issue of human-elephant conflict in Assam and the risks faced by wildlife in areas situated near human settlements. In recent years, the state has witnessed multiple cases involving elephant deaths linked to electrocution, poisoning and habitat-related conflicts.
Authorities are expected to conduct further forensic examination and detailed inquiries to determine the exact cause of death and establish responsibility if any unlawful activity is found to be involved.
