PM Modi Showcases Assam’s Muga Silk Heritage During Italy Visit with Gift to Giorgia Meloni

Guwahati, May 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has concluded his five-nation tour covering the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, with India’s diplomatic engagement also serving as a platform to highlight the country’s cultural and traditional heritage.

During his visit to Italy, Modi presented a Muga Silk stole to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, drawing attention to Assam’s centuries-old silk weaving tradition that has earned global recognition.

Widely known as the “Golden Silk” of the Brahmaputra Valley, Muga Silk is regarded as one of India’s rare and prestigious natural textiles. The fabric is distinguished by its natural golden sheen and is traditionally produced without the use of artificial dyes, reflecting Assam’s long-established sustainable weaving practices.

Muga silk is also recognised for its strength and durability and is considered among the strongest natural fibres in the world. Its natural shine is known to deepen over time, while features such as moisture absorption and resistance to ultraviolet rays contribute to its practical value and comfort.

The presentation of the traditional stole also symbolised a cultural link between Assam’s indigenous craftsmanship and Italy’s internationally recognised reputation for luxury textiles and design.

The gesture formed part of India’s broader efforts to showcase regional traditions, artisanal heritage and local craftsmanship during high-level diplomatic engagements on the global stage.
