Agartala, May 22: Tripura Police have detained three individuals, including a minor, in connection with multiple cattle theft cases reported from Belonia subdivision in South Tripura district, as authorities intensify efforts to uncover an alleged organised network involved in the crimes.
The detained individuals were identified as Sabuj Mia and Imran Hossain, along with a minor. The three were produced before a court on May 21 with a request for police remand.
According to police, investigators tracked the suspects to Melaghar using mobile phone surveillance before carrying out a raid through Melaghar Police Station that led to their detention.
Addressing reporters at Belonia Police Station, Mourya Krishna C said investigators believe a larger organised network may be operating behind the theft incidents.
He stated that police suspect the involvement of a gang comprising nearly 20 to 25 members and added that the investigation was progressing with efforts underway to bring all individuals involved under the law.
Authorities said search operations and raids are continuing at multiple locations as part of the wider probe. Police have also urged residents to inform nearby police stations if they observe suspicious activity or illegal transportation of cattle.
The latest detentions come amid rising public concern over repeated cattle theft incidents in Belonia subdivision. Reports indicate that around 52 cases have been registered since April this year, triggering protests by local residents who had earlier accused police of inadequate action against the theft network.
Road blockades and deputations had previously been organised demanding stronger intervention. Following increasing public pressure, police expanded surveillance measures and launched intensified operations, which led to the recent detentions.
Investigators are now examining potential links between the suspects and the broader organised network believed to be responsible for cattle thefts across the subdivision, with further arrests expected as the investigation continues.
