The Kuki CSO Working Committee has alleged that Mongkot Chepu village in the Litan-Sareikhong region of Ukhrul district came under a “strategic and unprovoked attack” on May 21, while also accusing certain groups of spreading what it described as “weaponised misinformation” through AI-generated content following the incident.
In a statement, the committee claimed that armed individuals allegedly linked to the NSCN Eastern Flank carried out a coordinated assault on the village at approximately 2:05 pm, bringing an end to nearly a week of relative calm in the area.
According to the committee, the incident resulted in several hours of gunfire, with village volunteers allegedly responding in self-defence. The exchange of fire reportedly continued until around 5:30 pm.
The committee further alleged that the attackers used sophisticated weaponry, including heavy ammunition and explosives, which it claimed indicated a more organised escalation in the sensitive region.
The statement also expressed concern over alleged unauthorised drone activity over Mongkot Chepu on May 19 and May 20. The committee claimed drone movements had been traced to Sikibung, also known as Sharkaphung village, and alleged that the activity suggested possible operational planning ahead of the reported attack.
Additionally, the Working Committee accused certain groups of circulating AI-generated images on social media platforms that allegedly portrayed Sikibung village as being attacked by armed Kuki militants.
Describing the circulation of such material as “deeply irresponsible and dangerously misleading”, the committee alleged that fabricated visuals and narratives were being used to distort facts and intensify tensions in parts of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
The organisation further warned that any continued dissemination of what it described as false propaganda portraying Kuki villagers as militants without evidence could lead to legal action, including defamation proceedings.
The allegations made by the committee have not been independently verified, and no official response from authorities regarding the claims was immediately available.
